Life Path Number Meaning & Calculation

The Life Path is the single most important number in a Pythagorean numerology chart. It is calculated from your full date of birth and it names the broad arc of your life — the themes you are most likely to live out, the lessons that keep showing up, and the kind of work the universe seems to keep handing you. Where most other numerology numbers come from your name and can change with marriage, divorce, or a legal name change, your Life Path is fixed at the moment you were born and stays the same for the rest of your life.

How to calculate it

The math is simple. You reduce your birth month, your birth day, and your birth year each to a single digit (or master number), then add the three reduced values together and reduce one more time. If at any step you land on 11, 22, or 33, you stop — those are master numbers and they don't reduce further.

Worked example for someone born March 15, 1990:

• March = 3 (already a single digit)
• 15 → 1 + 5 = 6
• 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
• 3 + 6 + 1 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1

Common mistakes

Two things trip people up. First, reducing too early — if your year reduces to 11 or 22, you keep it as a master number when you sum the three components, you don't flatten it to 2 or 4 first. Second, treating "double-reduce" as a rule — you only reduce until you reach a single digit or a master number, no further. 28 reduces to 10 reduces to 1; it does not reduce to "0".
