Soul Urge Number Meaning & Calculation

The Soul Urge — sometimes called the Heart's Desire — is the part of you that only your closest intimates may fully see. It names what you actually want, beneath social expectation and public persona. Where the Destiny number describes what you are here to do and your Life Path describes the broad arc of your years, the Soul Urge describes the inner motive. It is the answer to the question, "what would actually satisfy you?"

How to calculate it

Pythagorean numerology builds the Soul Urge from the vowels in your full birth name. The full name on your original birth certificate is the source — even if you go by a married name or stage name now, the Soul Urge stays anchored to the name you were given at birth. The vowel values are A=1, E=5, I=9, O=6, U=3, and Y=7 when Y carries a vowel sound. Worked example for "Mary Jane Smith":

• Mary → A (1) + Y (7, vowel sound here) = 8
• Jane → A (1) + E (5) = 6
• Smith → I (9) = 9
• 8 + 6 + 9 = 23 → 2 + 3 = 5

A note on Y

Y is the only letter that flips between vowel and consonant in Pythagorean numerology. The rule is sound, not spelling: if Y is doing the work of a vowel ("Lynn", "Mary", "Cyndi"), count it as a vowel. If it's doing the work of a consonant ("Yolanda"), count it as a consonant.
